Tamil Nadu revised its electoral rolls after completing the Special Intensive Revision exercise
A total of 97.4 lakh voters have been removed from the electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu following the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) enumeration phase, bringing the State’s current voter count down to 5.43 crore, Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik said on Friday.
As of October 27, 2025, before the SIR exercise began, Tamil Nadu had 6.41 crore registered voters, she said while briefing reporters at the Secretariat.
Gender-wise voter breakup
According to the newly released draft electoral rolls:
- Male voters: 2.77 crore
- Female voters: 2.66 crore
- Third gender voters: 7,191
- Differently-abled voters: 4.19 lakh
The enumeration phase concluded on December 14, after which the revised draft rolls were published and shared with all recognised political parties through the respective District Election Officers.
Reasons for deletion of names
Patnaik said the deletions were made after Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and Booth Level Agents (BLAs) conducted up to three house visits per voter during the enumeration phase.
The removals include:
- 26.94 lakh deceased voters
- 66.44 lakh voters who permanently shifted or were absent
- 3.39 lakh voters enrolled at multiple locations
- 12,000 individuals who opted not to remain on the electoral roll
“These names were excluded based on verification during field visits and documentary checks,” she said.
Claims and objections process begins
The Election Department has now opened the claims and objections period. Voters whose names are missing, or who wish to update details, can apply through:
- Form 6 – Inclusion of name
- Form 7 – Objections or deletions
- Form 8 – Change of address or corrections
Applications can be submitted online or directly through Booth Level Officers. Special camps will also be organised across constituencies to assist voters.
Responding to questions, Patnaik said repatriated Sri Lankan Tamils who applied under Form 6 would be verified by Electoral Registration Officers, and additional documents would be sought if required.
Constituencies with highest deletions
The Assembly constituencies that recorded the highest number of voter removals were:
- Sholinganallur
- Pallavaram
- Alandur
