Eleven-year-old Satvika Nagasri suffered a skull fracture after her teacher allegedly hit her with a school bag as punishment, prompting police action in Chittoor district
A distressing incident of corporal punishment has emerged from Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh, where an 11-year-old student suffered a serious skull fracture after being struck by her class teacher. The girl, identified as Satvika Nagasri, reportedly faced the violent punishment on September 10 for being “naughty” in class. The teacher, who was a Hindi instructor, allegedly hit her on the head with a school bag as a form of discipline.
Satvika’s mother, Vijetha, who also works at the same school, initially considered the incident a normal disciplinary measure. However, when Satvika began experiencing severe and persistent headaches, her parents sought medical help. She was first treated at a local private hospital before being referred to Bengaluru for specialized care. Medical tests revealed a fractured skull caused by the harsh blow from the teacher’s bag.
The parents lodged a police complaint against the teacher on September 15, prompting an official investigation by the school authorities and law enforcement. The incident has sparked anger and concern among parents and the local community regarding student safety and the use of corporal punishment in schools.
In a separate but similarly disturbing case, an assistant teacher in a government primary school in Odisha was suspended after brutally thrashing 31 students. The children were reportedly beaten with a bamboo stick for allegedly not paying proper respect after morning prayers, resulting in serious injuries. One child even lost consciousness, while others needed first aid.
Such incidents highlight ongoing issues with disciplinary methods in schools and the urgent need for improved teacher training and stricter monitoring. Local authorities have pledged to take necessary actions to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
The cases have triggered discussions on child protection in educational settings and the responsibilities of school administrations to prevent physical abuse. Parents and community members are calling for immediate reforms to safeguard students.
Meanwhile, Satvika is undergoing treatment and her family, along with advocates, hope her recovery goes well. They also urge stricter legal and institutional measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
These troubling events serve as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by children and underline the importance of safe, supportive, and nurturing educational environments.
