Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi smashed five sixes in the final over against Sri Lanka to lead a sensational recovery in the Asia Cup 2025 match
The Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan Asia Cup 2025 Group B match was mostly normal until the last over of Afghanistan’s innings, which made the game historic. Afghanistan’s captain Rashid Khan won the toss and chose to bat first. By the end of the 19th over, Afghanistan had scored 137 runs for the loss of 7 wickets.
In the final over, Afghanistan’s veteran Mohammad Nabi hit an incredible five sixes off spinner Dunith Wellalage, scoring 32 runs in the over, which also included a single and a no-ball. This became the second-most expensive over in Sri Lanka’s T20I history, behind only Akila Dananjaya’s 36-run over in 2021.
Sri Lanka pacer Nuwan Thushara had an excellent opening spell, taking 4 wickets for 18 runs, including three early strikes. But Nabi’s performance in the death overs helped Afghanistan recover to post a total of 169 for eight wickets.
Afghanistan looked set to score under 120 runs after losing three quick wickets in the powerplay. Thushara bowled well, taking wickets of Karim Janat and Sediquallah Atal with late swing. Wickets kept falling as Wellalage and Wanindu Hasaranga added pressure, and Afghanistan was reduced to 79 for six by the 13th over.
However, a partnership between Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi added 35 runs for the seventh wicket, pushing Afghanistan past 140 runs. Rashid’s quick runs included a no-look six, a shot he often uses.
Nabi also hit three consecutive fours in the penultimate over bowled by Dushmantha Chameera, who was expensive and gave away 50 runs in four overs. Despite Sri Lanka’s good bowling and fielding performances, highlighted by deep catches from Chameera and Kusal Perera, Afghanistan’s late surge put them in a strong position.
