AIMPLB demands immediate release of Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, calling his arrest in UP unjust and a misuse of police powers.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Tuesday strongly condemned the arrest of Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan and several others in Uttar Pradesh, calling the move “unjust and vindictive.”
AIMPLB spokesperson S.Q.R. Ilyas demanded the immediate release of the cleric and his supporters, stressing that their actions fell within the framework of democratic rights.
“Peaceful protest is a constitutional right and cannot be treated as a crime,” Mr. Ilyas said, adding that the filing of police cases in Kanpur over banners carrying the slogan “I Love Muhammad” was unwarranted.
He clarified that Maulana Khan had called for peaceful demonstrations and had not endorsed any form of violence.
The AIMPLB further urged the Uttar Pradesh government to withdraw all charges filed against the protesters and to stop what it described as the misuse of police authority to target dissent.
The development comes amid rising tensions in the state, with Muslim groups alleging attempts to curtail their freedom of expression under the pretext of law and order.
