In a shocking case, doctors in Hapur removed 29 steel spoons and 19 toothbrushes from a patient’s stomach after he swallowed them in anger.
In a shocking medical case, doctors in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, successfully removed 29 steel spoons and 19 toothbrushes from the stomach of a man admitted to a drug de-addiction centre.
The 40-year-old patient, identified as Sachin from Bulandshahr, had been suffering from severe stomach pain when his family brought him to Devnandini Hospital on Garh Road. Doctors were stunned after scans revealed dozens of metal and plastic objects lodged in his stomach.
According to his family, Sachin was admitted to a drug de-addiction centre in Ghaziabad due to substance abuse. Upset with being forced into treatment, he began swallowing spoons and toothbrushes out of anger.
Dr Shyam Kumar, a physician at Devnandini Hospital, said ultrasound and X-ray scans initially shocked the medical team. “We thought they could be removed via endoscopy, so the patient was sent to Meerut. However, doctors there said it was not possible, and the patient returned to us for surgery,” he explained.
The surgical team operated on Sachin last week and successfully removed all the objects. Doctors said his condition is now stable, though he remains under observation.
“This is the first time I have seen such a case in my career,” Dr Kumar said, calling it one of the strangest surgical challenges faced by his team.
The patient later admitted that he deliberately swallowed the objects in protest. “My family locked me in the de-addiction centre. At first, they said they would take me home after giving me medicine, but they left me there. In anger, I broke spoons and brushes kept on a stool at the centre, took them to the bathroom, and swallowed them with water,” Sachin told reporters.
He claimed he repeated this bizarre act multiple times until he had consumed a large number of spoons and toothbrushes. It was only when he developed unbearable stomach pain that his family rushed him to hospital.
Medical experts said swallowing foreign objects in large numbers is extremely dangerous and can cause internal bleeding, severe infection, or even death if not treated promptly.
While Sachin’s life has been saved, doctors have warned that he will need psychiatric evaluation and counseling alongside medical care to prevent similar episodes in the future.
