GHMC and HYDRAA officials conducting flood canal inspection to address waterlogging issues
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Hyderabad Disaster Management and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) are stepping up efforts to tackle the frequent flooding issues in Ameerpet and Maitrivanam. On August 21, key officials, including GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan and HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath, visited the flood canals near Ameerpet Metro Station and Maitrivanam to inspect obstructions and assess the situation. Their goal is to develop long-term solutions through field exercises and careful study of the canal system.
The main cause of flooding was found to be the severe narrowing of flood canals, which have shrunk from 40 feet wide to just about 10 feet near important roads like Ameerpet main road and SR Nagar main road. This narrowing creates bottlenecks that disrupt rainwater flow from areas such as Jubilee Hills, Venkatagiri, Rahmat Nagar, Yusufguda, and Krishna Kanth Park, worsening the waterlogging. Additional water inflows from Madhuranagar and Srinivas Nagar West add to the problem, causing repeated flooding in these localities. Authorities are now focusing on clearing these bottlenecks to improve floodwater management and prevent future issues.
