With Dasara around the corner, the festive buzz in parts of Telangana’s Jagtial district has taken an unconventional turn. Forget gold or gadgets — residents are queuing up for a chance to win goats, beer cartons, liquor bottles, and even hens, all for just Rs 150. These quirky lucky draws are turning heads with their eyebrow-raising prizes and social media promotions.

Local organisers in mandals like Sarangapur have kicked off aggressive sales of coupons, complete with eye-catching flex boards and online campaigns. A single Rs 150 coupon could win you a goat as the first prize or a beer carton as the second. Third prize? A liquor bottle. The list continues with a live hen and even a single beer bottle rounding off the top five.

According to organisers, these items reflect what they call “essential” elements of Dasara celebrations — non-vegetarian food and liquor. “What better way to celebrate than with a feast?” says one local organiser. He claims the response from villagers has been overwhelming, with tickets selling out fast as October 1 — the day of the draw — approaches.

However, the police are not too thrilled. They consider such schemes to be illegal and have warned organisers against misleading the public. In fact, last year, similar events led to the arrest of ten organisers in the neighbouring Rajanna-Sircilla district. Despite the warnings, in Jagtial, goats and beer remain the unlikely symbols of festive cheer this season.
