Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar compares drunk drivers to road terrorists after Kurnool accident.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar has declared a zero-tolerance policy on drunk driving, calling it “an act of terror on the roads” after the Kurnool bus tragedy that claimed 20 lives. In a strongly worded statement, Sajjanar compared drunk drivers to terrorists, saying they pose a deadly threat to public safety.
In a post on X that has gone viral, he wrote:
“This was not a road mishap but a criminal act of negligence that annihilated entire families. Driving under the influence is not a mistake — it is a crime. We will show no mercy to violators.”
Kurnool accident reignites outrage
The commissioner’s remarks came after investigation revealed that B. Shiva Shankar, the biker involved in the Kurnool bus accident, was heavily drunk when he lost control of his bike, crashing into a TSRTC bus and triggering a horrific multi-vehicle collision. The accident killed 20 passengers, including children.

Shocking statistics shared by the Hyderabad Traffic Police reveal:
- 1,00,000+ drunk driving cases since 2023
- 40,000 cases already in 2025
- Over 2,000 accident cases this year linked to drunk driving
- Majority of victims include young commuters and families
“No more excuses” – Sajjanar warns
Sajjanar has now ordered:
✔️ Daily drunk driving checkpoints across Hyderabad
✔️ Immediate arrests for high blood alcohol levels
✔️ Seizure of vehicles in serious cases
✔️ Court monitoring for harsh sentencing
✔️ Public naming of repeat offenders
“Every drunk driver will face strict legal consequences. Drunk driving destroys lives – we will not tolerate it,” Sajjanar said.
Tougher punishments being explored
Hyderabad Traffic Police DCP-1 Rahul Hegde said:
“License cancellation, jail time for repeat offenders, extended counselling, and criminal charges under IPC may be implemented for stricter enforcement.”
Officials admitted that the actual cases may be far higher as drunk driving checks are not held daily.
The Hyderabad Police also appealed to citizens to use cabs, designated drivers, and avoid late-night drunk driving, especially during weekends and festive seasons.
