Hyderabad Woman Abandoned by US Husband Claims He Took Passport and Divorced via WhatsApp

A Hyderabad woman, Hana Ahmed Khan, says her US-based husband abandoned her after allegedly taking her passport, green card, and vital documents back to America. The husband, Mohammad Zain Uddin, reportedly claimed to have divorced her via WhatsApp.

Hana, 31, married Zain Uddin, 36, a US citizen originally from Kachiguda, Hyderabad, in June 2022. She joined him in the US in February 2024 after obtaining her green card and social security number.

Less than a year later, the marriage allegedly ended abruptly when the couple visited Hyderabad in February 2025. Hana says her husband asked her to visit her family, then checked out of their hotel, flew back to the US, and took her immigration papers and passport with him.

“I was devastated. He didn’t just abandon me, he also shut every door for me to even fight my case legally in the US,” Hana told social workers. She says she didn’t know how or when she was divorced.

Hana has appealed to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the US consulate in Hyderabad for help obtaining a duplicate green card so she can return to the US and pursue legal action.

Social worker and MBT leader Amjed Ullah Khan urged External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to intervene, emphasizing the need for the US embassy and consulate to assist Hana in securing new travel documents.

Hana has received a fresh passport from Hyderabad’s regional passport office after lodging a complaint about her original being taken. Her brother alleged the ordeal started earlier in Chicago, where Hana was assaulted by Zain, and the police had intervened.

The family is shocked by the sudden divorce claim. Hana’s brother said their father confronted Zain, who said he had already divorced her, leaving the family heartbroken and demanding justice for Hana.
