People, including children, seeking shelter as intense shelling and gunfire disrupt Gaza City during the Israeli military’s offensive
Israel’s military has declared Gaza City a “dangerous combat zone” ahead of a significant assault, recovering the body of one hostage and the remains of another. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced there would no longer be “tactical pauses” in military activity within Gaza City, ending the temporary ceasefires that had allowed some humanitarian aid amid growing international concern over the worsening crisis.
Following authorization by the Israeli security cabinet to take over and occupy Gaza City, no aid distribution points will be set up inside the city, compelling residents to leave in search of food. The IDF has stepped up attacks on neighborhoods around the city’s perimeter, forcing thousands of Palestinians to seek refuge deeper within the densely packed urban areas, where the population density now reaches roughly 60,000 people per square kilometer.
Casualties continue to rise as hospitals like Hamad report bodies of those shot while waiting for aid, and many others injured in crossfires. Footage from Gaza shows terrified families fleeing shelling, mortar fire, and rockets. The dire situation has displaced many, including children, who describe living amidst continual danger and loss as they move toward safer camps.
