Neeraj Chopra finishes second with 85.01m throw as Julian Weber claims victory at Diamond League Final in Zurich.
Neeraj Chopra finished second at the Diamond League Final in Zurich on a challenging night, recording a best throw of 85.01 meters. German competitor Julian Weber dominated the event, posting the top four throws of the evening and winning gold with a personal best of 91.51 meters. Weber opened strong with a throw of 91.37 meters, then improved it by 14 centimeters in his second attempt.
Neeraj struggled to find his rhythm throughout the competition, beginning with throws of 84.35 meters and 82 meters before fouling three times in a row. His final attempt of 85.01 meters was enough to secure second place, narrowly edging out Keshorn Walcott by six centimeters. This was Neeraj’s first competitive event in over 50 days, having last competed in July at the Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru.
Reflecting on his performance, Neeraj acknowledged it was a tough day. “The timing was not so good today. The run-up was not so good,” he said. However, he expressed optimism ahead of the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo, emphasizing his goal to refine his technique in the weeks leading up to the event.
This finish extends Neeraj’s remarkable streak to 26 consecutive tournaments with a top-two finish, second only to legendary Jan Zelezny’s streak of 33. While disappointed with his performance in Zurich, Neeraj remains focused on the World Championships, where he will face stiff competition including Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem and Brazilian Luiz Mauricio Da Silva, both capable of throws above 90 meters.
