PM Modi and Donald Trump discuss India-US relations and trade
Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked US President Donald Trump for wishing him ahead of his 75th birthday. Modi said that India is fully committed to strengthening its partnership with the United States and also expressed support for Trump’s efforts to bring a peaceful end to the Ukraine conflict.
Trump, in response, wrote on Truth Social that he had a “wonderful call” with Modi. He praised the Prime Minister for doing a “tremendous job” and appreciated India’s support for US initiatives related to the Ukraine-Russia war.
The exchange comes at a time when relations have been strained due to high US tariffs on Indian imports. Washington has imposed a 50 per cent duty on many goods, including a 25 per cent tax on India’s purchases of Russian oil. The US has also warned India that it could lose access to America’s markets if it continues to resist buying US-grown corn.
Despite these issues, both countries resumed trade talks this week, which US officials described as “positive.” India and the US share a wide-ranging partnership in defence, trade, energy, and technology, with a goal to double their trade to $500 billion by 2030. Tuesday’s talks showed a willingness on both sides to find common ground and improve ties.
