Delhi Police team arrested self-styled godman Chaitanyananda Saraswati from Agra’s Taj Ganj hotel, weeks after 17 women accused him of harassment.
Self-styled godman Chaitanyananda Saraswati, accused of sexually harassing 17 women students at a private institute in Delhi, has been apprehended from Agra early Sunday, Delhi Police confirmed.
Officials said a Delhi Police team tracked the 62-year-old fugitive to a hotel in Agra’s Taj Ganj area, where he was staying under a false identity. He was caught around 3.30 am on Sunday.
A senior police officer revealed that Saraswati had fled Delhi on August 4, the day the FIR was registered against him. “Multiple teams were formed to nab him. Based on inputs, we tracked him to Agra and caught him,” the officer added.
₹8 Crore Frozen in Bank Accounts
Earlier, police froze ₹8 crore linked to Saraswati, parked across multiple bank accounts and fixed deposits. Investigators believe the funds were moved through accounts opened using different names and fake documents.
According to the FIR, Saraswati, a former chairman of the management institute in southwest Delhi, allegedly forced female students to visit his quarters late at night and sent them inappropriate text messages at odd hours.
Investigations also revealed that he monitored the movements of students through his phone, raising further concerns about privacy violations.
Police sources said that after the FIR, Saraswati withdrew over ₹50 lakh from different accounts. He had allegedly used multiple identities to operate these accounts and submitted documents with varying details during account opening.
In addition, police recovered fake visiting cards from Saraswati, falsely showing him as being associated with the United Nations and BRICS. The Delhi Police is continuing further investigation into his financial dealings and other possible frauds.
