A key witness in the 2023 Jaipur-Mumbai train shooting case gave a chilling testimony before a Mumbai court on Monday, recalling the terrifying moment when a Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable allegedly opened fire on passengers. The 29-year-old woman recounted seeing a “bearded man” lying in a pool of blood after being shot twice by the accused, Chetan Singh Chaudhary.
The incident occurred on July 31, 2023, when Chaudhary, then an RPF constable, allegedly shot and killed his senior, Assistant Sub-Inspector Tika Ram Meena, and three passengers onboard the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express near Palghar station. The accused was arrested shortly after the attack and later dismissed from service. He is currently in judicial custody.
Deposing before Additional Sessions Judge YB Pathan at the Borivali court, the woman said she saw a man fleeing the pantry car around 5:30 am with Chaudhary in pursuit. When she asked what was going on, he simply glared at her, prompting her to stay silent. She further said the accused later approached a bearded man in their compartment, argued with him, and then fired two shots, leaving the man fatally wounded.
The witness, clearly shaken by the incident, admitted she was too scared to approach the scene and only later understood the full gravity of the situation through news reports. Chaudhary, who appeared via video conferencing, has been charged under IPC Sections 302 (murder), 153-A (promoting enmity between groups), and other provisions under the Railways Act and Maharashtra Prevention of Defacement of Property Act.
