Doctors from GMCH and AIIMS-Guwahati conduct a second post-mortem on Zubeen Garg before his cremation in Guwahati.
In a deeply emotional moment for Assam, a second post-mortem was conducted on the body of celebrated singer Zubeen Garg on Tuesday morning at Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), just hours before his cremation. The autopsy was performed by a team of doctors from GMCH and AIIMS-Guwahati, following public demand and widespread calls for further medical examination.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the development, stating that although he did not personally support the idea of a second post-mortem, the state government chose to honour the sentiments of the people. “As a Zubeen fan, personally I didn’t endorse the idea of a second post-mortem… but people’s sentiment holds more weight than my opinion,” he shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter), adding that the Guwahati report would not necessarily be superior to the one from Singapore.
Zubeen Garg, aged 52, passed away on September 19 in Singapore while participating in the Northeast India Festival. He had travelled to Singapore on September 17 but tragically died two days later while swimming in the sea. His untimely death shocked fans across India and the Assamese music and film fraternity, where he was revered as a cultural icon.
Over the past two days, lakhs of fans gathered to bid a final farewell to the singer, standing in long queues to pay their respects. In a heartfelt gesture, Zubeen’s four pet dogs — Iko, Diya, Rambo, and Maya — were brought by the family to see him one last time, a moment that left many in tears.
