Union Home Minister Amit Shah switched to Zoho Mail, marking a big step for India’s Swadeshi tech movement, praised by Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu.
In a major push for indigenous technology, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday announced his shift to Zoho, India’s homegrown platform for emails, documents, and productivity tools.
This move reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, promoting self-reliance and the use of domestic technology to strengthen the national digital ecosystem.
Sharing the news on X, Shah wrote,
“Hello everyone, I have switched to Zoho Mail. Kindly note the change in my email address. My new email address is amitshah.bjp@zohomail.in. For future correspondence via mail, kindly use this address.”
The post quickly went viral, receiving widespread appreciation from industry leaders, citizens, and tech entrepreneurs.
Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu reacts
Zoho founder and CEO Sridhar Vembu thanked Amit Shah for the public endorsement, calling it “a proud moment for Indian innovation.”
“This gesture means a lot to our team and inspires us to continue building world-class technology in India,” he said.
Education Ministry follows suit
Following Shah’s announcement, the Ministry of Education has reportedly directed its officials to migrate from foreign office software to Zoho’s Office Suite for documentation and collaboration.
Officials said the transition will reduce dependency on global tech giants and reinforce India’s data security and privacy framework.
What is Zoho?
Founded in 1996, Zoho Corporation is a Chennai-based multinational technology firm providing over 80 integrated business and productivity apps.
From CRM and marketing to finance, HR, and analytics, Zoho’s ecosystem offers a cost-effective and privacy-centric alternative to platforms like Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and Salesforce.
Under the leadership of Sridhar Vembu, Zoho has become a symbol of India’s growing capability in enterprise software. The company runs on a “bootstrapped” model—eschewing venture funding to remain independent and Indian-owned.
A self-reliance milestone
PakkaHyderabadi research notes that Amit Shah’s move is symbolic, representing a growing trend in Indian governance to adopt homegrown digital ecosystems.
It aligns with the government’s vision to protect data sovereignty, promote indigenous innovation, and strengthen India’s global digital footprint.
