Karnataka Deputy CM D K Shivakumar said Bigg Boss Kannada and similar shows create employment and should be allowed to resolve compliance issues.
Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Wednesday voiced his support for Vels Studio, which hosts Bigg Boss Kannada, after the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) sealed the premises for alleged violations of environmental regulations.
Shivakumar said that entertainment shows like Bigg Boss are vital for generating employment and investment in the state’s media sector.
“I have advised that they should be given an opportunity to resolve whatever the issues are. Bigg Boss is not the only one — all entertainment programmes must continue,” he said.
KSPCB cites violation of pollution laws
In its order, the KSPCB stated that the studio had been conducting large-scale entertainment and film operations without obtaining mandatory consents under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.
Officials said that Jolly Wood Studio, where Bigg Boss Kannada is filmed, failed to provide the necessary environmental compliance documents before commencing operations.
Shivakumar calls for resolution
Shivakumar clarified that he was aware of the issue and had already sought a report from the District Commissioner of Bengaluru South.
“I inaugurated Jolly Wood Studio myself. I know that many private parties have invested there. Employment is equally important, so I have advised that the organisers should get time to fix the issues,” he said.
He added that KSPCB officials acted within the law, saying, “They have issued notices as per environmental norms. I came to know of the matter through the media.”
Political reactions
Union Minister and JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy took a dig at Shivakumar through a sarcastic post on X, writing: “Nut and bolt tightened.”
Reacting sharply, Shivakumar hit back, saying,
“Unless Kumaraswamy remembers my name every day, he will neither find peace nor sleep nor energy for anything.”
Vels Studio seeks time for compliance
Meanwhile, Bengaluru South Deputy Commissioner Yeshwanth V Gurukar said that the studio management has sought 10 days’ time to comply with all environmental requirements.
“We have forwarded their request to KSPCB. Further action will depend on their decision,” he told reporters in Ramanagara.
