President Donald Trump said “the war is over” and expressed confidence that the Gaza ceasefire will hold as he departed for Israel to oversee the Gaza Peace Plan.
US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas will hold, declaring that “the war is over” and suggesting that both sides are “tired of conflict after centuries.”
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Israel, Trump said,
“The war is over… I think it is going to hold. There are a lot of reasons why it’s going to hold. But I think people are tired of it. It’s been centuries… I think people are tired of it.”
The remarks came ahead of Trump’s first visit to Israel since brokering the Gaza Peace Plan, which led to a formal ceasefire between Israel and Hamas earlier this week.
Trump calls visit a “very special time”
Before boarding his flight, Trump described the upcoming trip as “a very special time,” highlighting the shared optimism surrounding the ceasefire deal.
“This is going to be a very special time… Everybody’s very excited about this moment in time,” Trump said, adding that for the first time, “everybody’s cheering at one time.”
He called the visit “a remarkable occasion”, symbolising hope and unity amid decades of division.
Packed itinerary in Israel and Egypt
According to the White House itinerary, Trump will land in Tel Aviv early Monday morning local time. His schedule includes:
- A private meeting with hostage families at the Knesset,
- A public address to Israeli lawmakers, and
- Later, a peace ceremony in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, alongside Middle Eastern leaders.
The Sharm el-Sheikh event is expected to formalise the first phase of the Gaza Peace Plan, which aims to disarm Hamas and create a long-term regional security framework.
Trump will spend less than seven hours in Israel and approximately three hours in Egypt before returning to Washington.
Phase one of Gaza Peace Plan in motion
The ceasefire implementation began earlier this week with the arrival of 200 US troops in Gaza to establish a joint coordination centre. The initiative marks the beginning of the 21-point Gaza Peace Plan, which calls for gradual disarmament, reconstruction efforts, and a humanitarian aid corridor.
A senior US official said the trip underscores Washington’s “active role in stabilising the Middle East” and its commitment to ensuring that “both sides adhere to the ceasefire terms.”
Meeting with hostage families
One of the most sensitive parts of Trump’s visit will be his closed-door meeting with families of hostages held by Hamas. The meeting is expected to focus on ensuring safe repatriation and continued diplomatic efforts for peace.
Trump is scheduled to return to the White House shortly after midnight on Tuesday, concluding a whirlwind diplomatic tour that reflects the urgency and scope of ongoing US-led peace efforts in the region.
