Security forces outside the Louvre Museum after thieves stole crown jewels in a 7-minute daylight robbery.
Louvre Museum Hit by Daring Daylight Heist; Priceless Crown Jewels Stolen in 7 Minutes
In a dramatic heist straight out of a Hollywood script, a gang of thieves broke into the Louvre Museum on Sunday morning and stole parts of France’s historic crown jewels — all within seven minutes. The robbery forced the emergency evacuation and closure of the world’s most visited museum.
Thieves Used Power Tools and Ladder Lift
According to initial reports, three to four masked thieves used a motorised furniture lift to enter the Galerie d’Apollon, the section of the museum where royal jewels and artifacts are displayed. Armed with power tools like angle grinders, they shattered the glass cases and made off with jewellery before fleeing on scooters.
A witness named Samir told French media:
“They climbed up, broke the glass and went inside — it took barely 30 seconds.”
Empress Eugénie’s Diamond Crown Recovered, Damaged
Authorities recovered one of the stolen items — a 19th-century crown belonging to Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III — which was found damaged and discarded near the museum during the escape.
The historic crown is encrusted with 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds, making it one of France’s most valuable royal artifacts. Experts fear the thieves may break down the remaining stolen items to sell the jewels individually.
Heist Exposes Museum Security Flaws
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the robbery revealed “serious vulnerabilities” in museum security. Just last month, thieves struck Paris’s Natural History Museum and Limoges Museum, stealing gold and antique artifacts worth millions.
Security analysts fear the stolen jewels could enter the illegal global black market for diamonds and antiques.
Louvre Temporarily Shut Down
The museum released a statement confirming it had to close “to preserve evidence and assist the investigation.” Armed police and soldiers quickly surrounded the iconic glass pyramid entrance to secure the area.
Investigation Underway
The Paris prosecutor has opened a criminal investigation, while a nationwide manhunt has been launched for the thieves. The robbery site is just 800 meters from Paris police headquarters, raising alarm over how quickly and efficiently the thieves executed their plan.
