A J&K court sentenced an accused to 20 years under the POCSO Act in Udhampur.
A court in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act).
The convict, identified as Mohammad Arshad alias Nikka, was also fined ₹50,000 by the court for the heinous crime. The conviction comes nearly four years after the incident, reflecting the judiciary’s firm stance on crimes against children.
Case registered in 2020
According to police officials, the case was registered in 2020 at Ramnagar Police Station after the minor’s family lodged a complaint alleging sexual assault. Following the investigation, police filed a charge sheet under relevant sections of the POCSO Act and IPC, and the trial began in a special POCSO court.
Police ensured conviction
A police spokesperson said:
“Police ensured a fair investigation and collected all necessary technical and medical evidence, which helped secure the conviction in this sensitive case. The verdict sends a strong message against crimes targeting minors.”
The police added that they will continue to pursue strict action against offenders involved in crimes against women and children.
Awareness on POCSO cases
Authorities have urged parents to report such crimes without fear and encouraged the community to support survivors instead of subjecting them to social stigma. Officials highlighted that fast-track courts and special investigation teams (SITs) are actively handling POCSO cases to ensure justice for victims.
