Rohini Acharya announced her exit from politics a day after the Mahagathbandhan’s heavy defeat in Bihar.
A day after the Rashtriya Janata Dal-led Mahagathbandhan suffered one of its worst defeats in the Bihar Assembly elections, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya announced that she is quitting politics and distancing herself from her family. Her announcement came through an emotional post on the social media platform X on Saturday.
Rohini alleged that she was pressured by two individuals — Sanjay Yadav, a key aide of Tejashwi Yadav, and another individual named Rameez — to take this step. In her statement, she wrote, “I’m quitting politics and I’m disowning my family… This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do… and I’m taking all the blame’s.” Her remarks triggered immediate reactions across political circles, exposing internal tensions within the RJD.
Her decision came at a time when the RJD is grappling with a major electoral setback. The party, which held 75 seats in the previous Assembly, collapsed to just 25 seats this time — its weakest performance since 2010. Despite being the largest constituent of the Mahagathbandhan and projecting Tejashwi Yadav as its chief ministerial face, the alliance failed to hold on to its core vote base.
The Mahagathbandhan as a whole also witnessed a dramatic fall, finishing with fewer than 40 seats, far from the numbers required for government formation. The alliance’s vote share declined sharply, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction among voters and a failure to convert political messaging into electoral gains.
In sharp contrast, the NDA registered a sweeping victory, securing 202 seats. The BJP emerged as the standout performer with 89 seats, its highest-ever tally in Bihar. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) closely followed with 85 seats, while Chirag Paswan’s LJP (RV) delivered an impressive performance, winning 19 out of 29 seats contested. HAM secured 5 seats, and Upendra Kushwaha’s party added 4 more to the NDA’s overall strength.
Reacting to the results for the first time, the RJD maintained that it was “not despondent” and would introspect on the reasons behind the massive loss. However, Rohini Acharya’s public outburst and her decision to walk away from politics have added a new layer of complexity to the party’s growing internal crisis.
The developments have intensified scrutiny on the Mahagathbandhan’s leadership, strategy, and organisational weaknesses. For the RJD, the combination of electoral defeat and internal discord poses a serious challenge as it looks to rebuild its political standing in Bihar.
