The last rites of the 45 Umrah pilgrims from Hyderabad who died in the tragic bus accident near Madinah, Saudi Arabia, will be performed on Friday, November 21, in the holy city, officials confirmed.
A Telangana government delegation, led by Minorities Welfare Minister Mohd. Azharuddin, has been in Madinah for the past three days to oversee arrangements and assist the families of the deceased. The team also includes MLA Majid Hussain and Minorities Welfare Department Secretary B. Shafiullah.
High-Level Meeting With Indian and Saudi Authorities
On Thursday, the Telangana delegation held a detailed review meeting with officials from the Government of India, including:
- S. Abdul Nazeer, Governor of Andhra Pradesh
- Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary (CPV & OIA), Ministry of External Affairs
- Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan, Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia
The teams assessed ongoing arrangements related to funeral procedures, formalities, and family support.
Burial Requested at Masjid-e-Nabawi and Jannat-ul-Baqi
Minister Azharuddin requested that the funeral prayers be offered at Masjid-e-Nabawi followed by burial at Jannat-ul-Baqi, one of the most revered graveyards in the Islamic world.
According to an official statement, Saudi authorities have accepted the request, and formal procedures for the burial at Jannat-ul-Baqi are already underway.
The family members of all deceased pilgrims have arrived in Madinah to attend the last rites.
Support From Telangana Government
Minister Azharuddin expressed gratitude to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for extending full support to the bereaved families. The State government has:
- Approved ₹5 lakh ex-gratia to each victim’s family
- Arranged travel for two members of each family to Saudi Arabia
- Provided transportation, accommodation, and food for the families in Madinah
In a post on X, Azharuddin wrote:
“Efforts are underway to complete the required formalities. Insha’Allah, the last rites and funeral will be performed tomorrow, hopefully at Jannat-ul-Baqi. We thank the Government of Saudi Arabia for their cooperation.”
