Mumbai streets flooded as heavy rains lead to office closures and waterlogging on railway tracks and roads.
Mumbai is facing heavy rains, and because of this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday on August 19 for all government and semi-government offices. However, this does not include essential and emergency services, which will keep working as usual. Private offices have also been asked to let their employees work from home if possible, so people can stay safe.
This decision was made after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai city and the suburbs. In the past 24 hours, Mumbai has recorded very high rainfall—186.43 mm in the main city, 208.78 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 238.19 mm in the western suburbs. There are also warnings about strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 55 kmph.
The BMC has also asked everyone to avoid unnecessary travel today as more rain is expected through the day, especially during the early morning and evening hours. High tides at 9:16 am and 8:53 pm might cause even more waterlogging, leading to traffic jams and slowdowns.
Already, there have been many complaints about water collecting on railway tracks and on roads in low-lying areas like Dadar, Matunga, Parel, and Sion. Daily life has been disrupted, with trains and traffic badly affected by the non-stop rain in Mumbai.
