High-level meeting held to discuss next steps after SC annulled two MLC nominations in Telangana.
The Telangana government is expected to soon declare two vacant MLC (Member of Legislative Council) seats after the Supreme Court recently annulled the nominations of M Kodandaram and Amer Ali Khan. Both the Telangana legislative council and the General Administration Department (GAD) will inform the Election Commission as required. However, any new nominations to fill these seats will be delayed until after September 17, when the Supreme Court is likely to give a final ruling on the case. Top officials, including the council chairman, assembly speaker, and the advocate general, have held meetings to discuss possible steps. The court’s annulment was based on procedural issues, and the state government is considering re-nominating Kodandaram and Amer Ali Khan, as their nominations were not challenged on personal grounds.
Meanwhile, the assembly speaker has begun addressing the issue of 10 MLAs who defected from BRS to the Congress party. Acting on the Supreme Court’s instructions, the speaker plans to serve notices to these legislators, giving them at least 15 days to provide their clarifications. Some MLAs are now claiming they have not formally joined Congress, while others, like Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender, have openly contested elections on a Congress ticket. The final decision will depend on the responses and further legal guidance.
