The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a raid on the residence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former health minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Tuesday morning. The action is part of an ongoing investigation into a massive hospital construction scam in Delhi involving alleged irregularities and financial mismanagement.
The scam pertains to projects worth approximately ₹5,590 crore approved by the Delhi government in 2018-19 for the construction of 24 hospitals. These projects were supposed to be completed within six months, including establishing ICU facilities. However, even after three years, the construction work remains largely incomplete, raising serious concerns about inefficiency and alleged corruption.
Investigations have exposed multiple irregularities. Despite spending around ₹800 crore, only about 50% of the work has been completed. The cost of the LNJP hospital project alone escalated from ₹488 crore to ₹1,135 crore without significant progress. Moreover, construction activities began at several sites without necessary approvals, with contractors’ roles coming under suspicion.
Another pending issue is the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) project, which has been delayed since 2016, allegedly deliberately stalled. Both Saurabh Bharadwaj and fellow AAP leader Satyendra Jain are currently under scrutiny by the ED. The agency has registered an ECIR (Enforcement Case Information Report) in this case and is probing the allegations further.
The ED’s raid marks a significant step in the investigation into corruption and mismanagement within Delhi’s healthcare infrastructure projects. Authorities reinforce their commitment to bring accountability and transparency in projects funded by state resources.
