NDA candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan wins vice-presidential election by securing 452 votes against opposition’s B. Sudershan Reddy’s 300 votes
NDA candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan won the vice-presidential election on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, securing 452 votes against opposition candidate B. Sudershan Reddy, who received 300 votes, according to Returning Officer P.C. Mody. The vote tally indicated some cross-voting, with BJP leaders claiming at least 15 Opposition MPs supported Radhakrishnan. The Congress, however, asserted that all 315 of its MPs participated in the vote as a united bloc.
A total of 767 MPs cast their ballots with a turnout of 98.2%, of which 752 votes were valid and 15 votes invalid. One postal ballot was canceled as the MP declined to vote. Radhakrishnan secured 452 first preference votes, while Reddy received 300. Following the declaration, P.C. Mody announced, “I declare C P Radhakrishnan elected to the post of Vice President of India and the results will be communicated to the Election Commission.”
Radhakrishnan will be India’s 15th Vice-President, succeeding Jagdeep Dhankhar, whose sudden resignation on July 21 necessitated this election. The electoral college consisted of 781 members from both Houses of Parliament—245 from the Rajya Sabha and 543 from the Lok Sabha, including 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha. The election was held under a secret ballot system, with MPs free from party whips.
