MIB directs removal of videos and posts critical of Adani Enterprises following Delhi court order in defamation suit
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has issued takedown notices to several journalists, media houses, and creators including Ravish Kumar, Dhruv Rathee, Newslaundry, The Wire, HW News, and Aakash Banerjee’s The Deshbhakt. This directive follows a Delhi court’s gag order in a defamation case filed by Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) on September 6, 2025.
The ministry’s notice lists 138 YouTube videos and 83 Instagram posts, asking for their removal due to alleged defamation of the Adani group. Some videos flagged include not only investigative journalism but satire and incidental mentions, such as a Newslaundry subscription appeal video and an interview with comedian Kunal Kamra. The ministry claimed that the media organizations failed to comply with the court order within the stipulated time and directed them to act within 36 hours, with Google and Meta being asked to intervene as intermediaries.
The court order restrains certain journalists from publishing material deemed defamatory against AEL. However, it also clarifies that fair, accurate, substantiated, and verified reporting remains protected. Several journalists and media entities have challenged the order, arguing their content is factual and in the public interest.
