The United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for ceasefire in Gaza and release of hostages, arguing the draft failed to condemn Hamas
The United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on Thursday that called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. The resolution was supported by the other 14 members of the council and described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic.”
It also urged Israel to lift restrictions that hinder the delivery of aid to the 2.1 million Palestinians living in Gaza.
Before the vote, Morgan Ortagus, a senior US policy adviser, said the US opposition was expected because the resolution did not condemn Hamas or recognize Israel’s right to defend itself.
She criticized the resolution for legitimizing “false narratives” that benefit Hamas and accused other council members of ignoring US warnings and adopting what she called “performative action” designed to invite a US veto.
