Owaisi Welcomes Supreme Court Observation on Vande Mataram, Criticises Solicitor General

Asaduddin Owaisi comments on the Supreme Court’s observation regarding Vande Mataram.
AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi welcomed the Supreme Court’s observation that individuals should not face criminal prosecution simply for refusing to sing Vande Mataram if doing so conflicts with their conscience. Owaisi made the remarks on Tuesday, September 22, amid a legal debate over whether singing all six stanzas of the national song can be made compulsory.
The Supreme Court was hearing a petition challenging legal provisions related to the protection of Vande Mataram and the proposed requirement to sing all six stanzas. During the proceedings, the court referred to the constitutional protection of individual conscience and questioned whether a person should face criminal consequences for choosing not to sing the song.
Owaisi also criticised Solicitor General Tushar Mehta over remarks made during the hearing. The proceedings included a heated exchange between lawyers, with the debate focusing on the legal limits of compulsory participation in the national song and the protection of individual rights. The Supreme Court has sought the Centre’s response, and the matter remains under consideration.
