BRS working president KT Rama Rao has sharply criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI), saying it is acting more like a branch of the NDA government instead of defending democracy. He feels that the ECI is failing to properly manage India’s elections and is not living up to its responsibility. Rama Rao’s comments come after the Chief Election Commissioner’s recent press conference, which he believes raised more doubts than it cleared up.
Rama Rao said the country does not just need a revision of the electoral rolls, but a complete review of the ECI itself. He pointed out that if the ECI admits there are mistakes in the voter lists, then it is also admitting its own carelessness. For him, this shows that the organization trusted to protect democracy is not doing its job right.
According to Rama Rao, fixing voter lists alone won’t solve the problem. He called for a full overhaul of the Election Commission, suggesting that only a thorough and careful revision of the ECI will bring back people’s faith in elections. He said such steps are necessary if India wants to continue calling itself a democracy.
KT Rama Rao’s statements reflect wider worries among opposition leaders and the general public about whether India’s democratic institutions are truly fair and effective. His remarks add strength to the growing calls for transparency and reform in the bodies that manage the country’s elections.
