The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Congress leader Danam Nagender’s petition on Wednesday, challenging the Telangana High Court’s order that disqualified him as the MLA from Hyderabad’s Khairatabad Assembly constituency. Nagender approached the apex court after the High Court set aside the Assembly Speaker’s decision and declared his membership invalid under the anti-defection law.
The High Court ruled that Nagender, who was elected to the Assembly on a BRS ticket in 2023, incurred disqualification after contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha election as a Congress candidate. The court held that his actions attracted the provisions of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, resulting in the loss of his Assembly membership.
In his appeal before the Supreme Court, Danam Nagender has sought relief from the High Court verdict.
