Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy leads the Sports Hub Board’s first meeting, outlining plans to boost sports in the state.
The Sports Hub Board of Telangana convened its inaugural meeting on Thursday, setting ambitious goals to position Telangana as a leading global sports destination. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy presided over the meeting and passed a resolution to host major sports events such as Khelo India, the Commonwealth Games, and the Olympics within the state.
To ensure effective sports development, the Board decided to form sub-committees focused on stadium maintenance, upgrading sports facilities, training athletes and coaches, and implementing the Telangana Sports Policy’s various initiatives. CM Revanth Reddy emphasized his vision to elevate Hyderabad into a preferred sports hub by cultivating a robust sporting culture comparable to the thriving IT culture in the region. He highlighted that the state’s sports budget has increased sixteenfold and that incentives along with government jobs are being offered to outstanding athletes.
Addressing challenges, the Chief Minister acknowledged the shortage of qualified coaches matching international standards and urged the Board to devise a three-year action plan to enhance coaching quality and maximize the use of existing sports infrastructure. The Board, including corporate leaders, athletes, and sports administrators, has been set up to coordinate resources and expertise to bolster Telangana’s sports ecosystem.
Former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev recommended encouraging universal sports participation among students, drawing inspiration from Haryana’s wrestling culture. Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra stressed that every school should employ dedicated physical education teachers and directors to nurture young talent.
