US Warns Iranian Airlines Could Face Global Shutdown From September 23
The United States has warned that Iranian airlines could effectively lose access to international aviation services from September 23, as Washington steps up economic pressure on Tehran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said foreign airports and aviation companies providing services to Iranian carriers could face consequences under the American sanctions regime.
Speaking to CNBC, Bessent said that airlines operating Iranian aircraft would face difficulties obtaining essential services, including fuel, landing facilities and ticketing support. He warned that companies continuing to provide these services could risk losing access to the US dollar financial system. The statement comes as Washington expands sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation sector.
The latest warning has raised concerns about the future of Iran’s international air connectivity. Iranian airlines have already faced years of restrictions affecting aircraft purchases, maintenance and spare parts. While the US announcement could make overseas operations more difficult, it does not automatically mean that every Iranian flight will physically stop operating worldwide.
